Brain injury is one of the most devastating catastrophic injuries that can occur to an individual and their family. It is also one of the most misunderstood and untreated diagnoses. Most often it should be diagnosed on the basis of history and clinical symptoms. Unfortunately, it does not always lend itself to physical findings on standard medical tests such as X-Ray, CT scan, MRI, etc. Because it may not show up on these clinical tests, individuals may be dismissed by the medical community as exaggerating their complaints.

What we do know is that mild and moderate brain injuries present cognitive (problems with thinking) and behavioral findings. These problems surface with difficulties in concentration, memory, attention, impulse control, anger management and other "thinking problems."

Diagnosing these real, functional deficits leads to the proper diagnosis of brain injury. With the proper diagnosis, the individual can receive appropriate treatment for these problems and continue on with their life.

The root word of rehabilitation, "rehab," is defined as 'living again.' Our goal is to assist the individual and their family in this difficult journey to regain control of their life.

Ann Arbor Rehabilitation Centers provides compassionate, comprehensive services for adults and children with brain injury. We believe that the involvement of family and caregivers is a necessary component of the individual's treatment plan. Emotional and physical challenges experienced by their significant others must be addressed to better serve the individual.

Our Interdisciplinary Treatment Team determines the most appropriate solutions and treatment strategies to meet the unique needs of the individual. As a group, the Team, including the individual served, plans and manages the treatment goals. Working together, we are able to reinforce therapy goals and provide for continuity of care throughout treatment.

Communication and cooperation are hallmarks of our program. Families are encouraged to contact the personnel of Ann Arbor Rehabilitation Centers. We wish to promote communication and cooperation with additional team members such as physicians, nurses, insurance representatives, attorneys, and family members. We advocate for appropriate care and promote the individual's involvement in community services when appropriate.
